Now there are a good handful of websites that are already giving away information for free, and they have discovered why this method of marketing works so well.  But I just wanted to point out that many of the REALLY successful websites are giving away information so great that they are making extraordinary amounts of internet profits.  Basically, what I am saying is that it almost seems like the better your free information is, the more money you are going to make. 

But why is this?  Why if I give you tons of free conference calls, eBooks, videos and mini courses, information that other companies would probably charge you hundreds of dollars for, if I do all this why will I make a whole lot of income?  I believe this is because people have the mindset that if the free information is so great, then the paid information must be spectacular.  This puts a lot of pressure on us as a business to create the best information that we can provide.  But, as a business owner, isn’t that what I should be doing anyway?  And, if I am providing outstanding information, then I have the right to charge a bit more than a mediocre company would, right? 

Think about this:  If you come to my website and I give you a free weekly newsletter for signing up on my auto responder, then that would be worth it to you if I was giving you some great information each week.  But if I am only giving you one email per week, are you going to think that the program that I am selling you is worth $1,000?  Nope!  If I were you, I wouldn’t expect to pay more than $34 on a website that was sending me an occasional email each week as the “free info.”  But, if each week I invite you to a couple of conference calls, and every few weeks I am sending you free 50 page pdfs with valuable information, and if I am constantly creating great videos you can view for free, then could I justify the $1,000 cost for my program?  The answer for most businesses would be a confident “yes.”  So, what is the whole point of what I am teaching you hear.  What I am trying to teach you is that the more great information you can give away for free, the more likely you are going to be to make huge internet profits.  And if you give away a minimal amount of information for free each week, then it will be pretty tough to justify a price of $1,000, $500, or even $200 for whatever product or service you are selling.

But some companies already know this and are afraid.  They are afraid that if they give away their information for free that they won’t make any sales.  Smack, smack, smack!  Wake up!  You are thinking completely backwards, and here’s why:  What happens when you give out great information for free?  Does the average person just take the free stuff and then run with it?  Maybe in some cases, but when you go to places like Sam’s Club and Costco, and they give you that free food sample, have you even gone back and decided to buy that new product?  Even if you have only done this once or twice in the past few years, giving away things for free has turned you into a buyer.  You tried the free sample, it got your taste buds excited, and then you wanted more. 

What if I do the same thing with my business.  What if I get my prospects excited with the free stuff?  Will they want more?  Well, why not?  Let’s look at the example of software companies.  They give you a 1 month free trial of the software.  The software proves to add value to your business.  But you only had the 1 month free trial.  How likely are you to purchase the full software program?  I admit, I have fallen for this “trap” a few times.  At times the free trials of these software programs have been so great that I almost have felt “forced” to pay for the full version of these software programs.  I just had to have it because I had already integrated the software into my business!

But some companies are afraid.  They are afraid that if they give out a bunch of information, a free trial, or a free sample, then people won’t come back for more.  If you are that afraid that people won’t come back for more, then you likely need to improve your company’s products and services, because if I try your software program, or if I try your new pasta at Costco, or if I get on your weekly newsletter, and the free stuff isn’t great, then I WON’T be coming back for more.  You may even know that your products and services need improving, and that may be why you are afraid to give away some of your info for free.  You know that most people won’t come back for more if they try the free stuff.  If you find yourself in this situation, then you need to greatly improve your business practices if you want your business to make it through the next year.   

The question is: is using these types of sites a great way for creating free viral advertising? And do these sites even work? Well, the answer may suprise you: yes, these sites work and can be a great way for getting free traffic to your site, but there is a huge reason why I don’t participate in these sites…

You see, I care about getting TARGETED visitors to my site. The last time my site got “stumbled upon” at www.stumbleupon.com, I was rather suprised at the amount of free traffic I received, but I was also dissapointed that NONE of those visitors subscribed to my site. The free traffic did me nothing. This is the reason why I don’t participate in these free viral sites and other sites where you “earn credits” by viewing other people’s sites. This traffic isn’t targeted. I don’t want this traffic to my site, and I have affiliates that send me this type of traffic. I wish I could tell those affiliates to stop for a very specific reason. That reason is that I care about my conversion rates, and this type of traffic ruins my conversion rates. I like to tell my affiliate team that my conversion rates are high so that they are motivated to send targeted traffic to my site, but my conversion rates aren’t as high as they could be because of the traffic that I receive from some affiliates that isn’t targeted.

My thinking is this: If the traffic isn’t targeted, then it is a waste of my time. Go after the targeted traffic! The free traffic techniques we teach on this blog are the ones that work and that are actually targeted.

Reason #1: Paying for your advertising can break the bank. There are a number of internet marketers out there with great products and services that can really help people out, but at times, paying even 30 cents per click can make it so that little profits are generated. Also, with the growing competition of PPC advertising, you are sometimes lucky if you can still pay 30 cents per click. Paying for your advertising should just be the start, and then you’ll want to start getting some of your advertising for free through the free viral techniques that we teach.

Reason #2: You may never get past a few hundred visitors to your site each day if your site doesn’t go viral. How much money would you like to make with your new site? 6 figures, 7 figures? Can you make even 6 figures with only a few hundred visitors per day? If people don’t tell people, don’t tell people, who tell other people about your site, then you’ll likely never get thousands of visitors to your site each day.

Reason #3: Part of free viral advertising comes from the fact that you are benefiting the online community with something. If you are helping people and solving people’s problems, then some people will tell others about your site. If you don’t do your market research and then create a site that truly helps people, then how do you expect to achieve online success? With the large amount of competition across the web, you will want to have at least a small amount of free viral advertising. This will act as a gauge to show you that you are on your way to success.

So, these are the 3 reasons why you must take this “gamble” to try and make your site go viral. You’ve got to work at it. There are so many people trying to make a buck online nowadays that if you don’t take this gamble, then you likely aren’t trying hard enough.

Now, this short article isn’t about attracting the correct people to your list, but this article is designed to help teach you some tricks to virally building your list.  What you really want is for your list to grow larger and larger, and you want to get that list to the point where you can’t stop that list from growing.  I can think of a few internet marketers who have successfully done this, and what seems to be one of their biggest tricks in creating a viral list is through setting up an amazing affiliate program.

Setting up an affiliate program can take some time and effort, but if you do it right, people will automatically start visiting your website, and you will make a whole lot more sales.  One important thing though:  Make sure that you are very generous with your affiliate program.  If you are selling a $29 digital product, and you only offer a 30% commission, then people are only making about $9 each time someone buys through them.  Most affiliate marketers will agree that this is a very unappealing program.  But, if you have a $97 digital product, and you offer a generous 75% commission, then that is about $70 made per sale.  I would pick the 75% commission program over the 30% program any day.  By the way, if you are selling digital products, then setting up this type of affiliate program through ClickBank can be very easy for you to do.

O.K., so other than setting up great affiliate programs, there are other ways to create a viral list for your business.  One of my favorite ways is to create viral content on my website.  For example, if I tell you that you are going to get free eBooks, free conference calls and a free mini course on my website, all related to a topic of your interest, then that gives you a very compelling reason to visit my website and join my list.  Now, if that content is as great as I say it is, and if that content is good enough that people would probably sell it for hundreds of dollars, then there is a good chance that you may tell someone else about my website.  Achieving this word of mouth advertising is viewed as “hard to do” for most people.  And I will admit, if you are a lazy marketer, then this is really hard to do.  But, if you put your heart and soul into the content that you are offering, and if you strive to make this content the best free content in your niche, then the word of mouth marketing will come and your list will grow virally by the thousands.

Now, I’ll admit that this video was a pretty good video, and it actually deserved a rating, but the funny thing is that every day I’ll view a good handful of great informative videos, and I won’t give those videos a rating.  The rating system with most of the video sharing sites help these sites determine which videos are of great value.  If a certain video gets a lot of ratings and comments, then that means that the video will normally get more and more exposure.  So, if you have a way of getting people to rate and comment on your videos, then this means that your videos will get ranked even higher!

So, here is the magic formula for making all of this happen:  Just simply ask for to rate and comment on your video.  That’s it!  You see, I did a little bit of research and found that when people actually ask for your to rate and comment of their video, a lot of the time they will at least rate the video for you, just because you asked!  That is what I did.  I rated this guy’s video because he asked me to.  Most of the time I am so busy that I don’t even remember that there is a rating system, but when he asked me to rate his video within the video, I was reminded and I simply gave him a rating without thinking. 

So, when it comes to viral video marketing, the magic words are simply “please” and “thank you.”  Simply thanking people for watching your video and asking them to please comment and rank your video will get your video more and more exposure.  Also, if you ask people to share your video with others, then they will more than likely remeber to share your video if it is worth sharing.

So why does this work and will this always work?  Well, I’ll be the first to tell you that this will not always work, and the first reason why is because most people ask for you to rate, share, or comment on the video at the very end of the video.  And if you video is garbage, then almost nobody will see the end of your video.  So, there is an important psychological aspect that you need to include when you ask someone to share, rate, or comment on your video.  You need to make the viewer feel like that you have provided them will something valuable as they watched your video.  This is especially easy with a “how to” video.  Think about this:  If I created a really detailed “how to” video that taught you how to easily make an extra $100 today, then my guess would be that you would be very thankful for this information.  Now, if I simply asked you a favor at the end of the video, a favor that would just take anywhere from 1 second to a couple of minutes (your choice by-the-way) then would you at least do me the 1 second favor?  In most cases, most people would at least do the 1 second favor, and when I talk about a 1 second favor, I just mean simply giving my video a rating, and if my video even just gets a bunch of ratings, then my video will get ranked higher and higher, given my video more and more views and allowing that video to be shared with more and more viewers.

One of the most popular ways for getting free viral traffic to your websites is by creating a viral eBook; the only problem is that many people do it all wrong.  Many people will write a book report and call it an eBook.  What I mean by this is that many people will write a 30 page guide, put everything is 18 point font, give people resale and master distribution rights, and call it good.  Now, some people write really great 30 page eBooks with killer content, but in the majority of cases, if you really want your viral eBook to be shared with everyone, then a 30 page “book report” isn’t going to work! 

So, here’s the real secret to creating a great viral eBook:  You are going to want to make the content so great that you would find people across the web selling similar content for $30, $50, $100 or more.  You want people to read your book and then think to themselves that the information was so great that they would have been willing to pay for the information.  When people think this to themselves, then they will want to include your eBook as a free bonus on their site, give it away, or resell your eBook for a profit.  You will mention your websites and maybe include a few affiliate links in your eBook so that you get free traffic and maybe make some extra income for your efforts.  

A second very popular way for you to create free viral marketing for your website is to provide great resources on your site.  It is very popular to see sites giving away free eCourses or newsletters.  I have done this a number of times and it works very well.  You can also give away your viral eBooks, free recorded calls, coupons, free reports, etc.  Basically, you want to provide tons of resources with high perceived value that you can deliver electronically, making the only cost to you your time.  Providing people with these great free offers usually automatically assures that you will get word of mouth advertising.  Remember that content is king, and that especially goes for viral marketing. 

A third sure-fire technique to brining free viral traffic to your websites is by creating viral videos. I admit that this is not an easy task to accomplish, but if you put in some effort, then it can all be worth it.  Here are a few tips:  First, make sure that after you have creating your “amazing video” that you include within that video a compelling offer for people to visit your website and learn more.  Second, ask people to share your video with friends and ask them to comment and rank your video.  If you convince people that your video is worth sharing, and then ask them to share it, then they likely will.  Third, upload your viral video to multiple video sharing sites for maximum exposure.  You see, your video make go viral on a site like Mega Video before it goes viral on YouTube, so you’ll want to upload and promote your video on as many sites as possible for maximum effectiveness. 

I would like to point out that there is a common theme amongst all three of these viral marketing techniques, and that is the theme of creating great content and then giving it to people for free.  When viral marketing has worked the best, it has always been because of people providing very informative or entertaining information for free.  The more value you can provide to people for free, the more word of mouth marketing you will receive.  Then you will be rewarded with tons of free website traffic while others may struggle to break even with a similar business.
