Some people get the false impression that when it comes to submitting articles across the web that the more that you submit, the more exposure that you are going to get and the more free traffic you will obtain. Although I myself would love this to be the case (since I can easily write 5 to 10 decent articles every day) unfortunately it can actually hurt your business if you try to do a type of “article blitz.”

You see, each time you submit an article to most of the article directories across the web, it actually gets reviewed for content. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are some article directories that accept just about every single article that is submitted to them. Unfortunately, your article on one of these sites is going to get you little to zero exposure. What you really want is to write good content, get it seen by some of the more prestigious article directory sites, and then hope that they promote that article to other sites as great content.

Now, here’s where even the best of article writers will mess up. They will get the false idea in their heads that if they are always writing great content, then they will always have their articles accepted by the article directory sites. The truth is that if an article directory site has noticed that you are sending them 5, 10, or 20 articles per week, they will then recognize you as the author and start to simply discard your “article blitz.” But if you limit your article writing to just maybe a few articles per week, and make each one of those articles your best work, then these article directory sites will then start to really notice you as an expert author. And as long as your content continues to perform, then you will grow as a valuable asset to them and they will start to look forward to your content. It will get easier and easier for them to accept each one of your articles into their directory, and your best work (in their eyes) will be shared with more and more sites, bringing you the exposure that you deserve.

So, don’t make the mistake of planning on an “article blitz.” Do things right. Make a couple of great articles each week and get those couple of articles actually read and accepted by the article directories. Then, all will be well with your article marketing.

What I am about to share with you are some really great ways for getting free advertising for your websites. There are a couple of websites that I own in which I only use these free traffic generating techniques, and I will never pay for advertising on these websites. Honestly, when you are getting thousands and thousands of free visitors to your websites, why would you want to give up all of your income to Google and other pay-per-click programs?

One of the best free advertising options that are available to you is writing articles. Now, for some businesses, you may think that this will be hard for you to do. I want to give you an example of what I have done for one of my retail websites. I own a website where I sell belts, purses, wallets, etc. If you had a website just like this, what kind of articles could you write in order to get free traffic? At first, some people may think there would be nothing that you could write in order to generate free traffic to a retail site such as this. But the real answer is that you can easily take each one of your products and write a simple “review” of each product. For example: maybe you have a new novelty alarm clock that you sell on your website. Maybe it’s one of those clocks that help you get out of bed easier. You can easily write a review about how this alarm clock works and how it has helped people. When people read your article, they will learn about the product and then be left with an option to where they should buy that product (you will include your website at the end of the article in the “About the Author” box). Once you have done this with one of your products, then you do it with the rest of your products. Even if you don’t think that some of your reviews are “that great,” if you are selling a product, then a lot of the time people want to read what other people have to say about that product.

Now, if your website is an informational website, then of course, writing “how to” articles and informative articles relevant to your website will be the easiest thing possible. I just gave the example of a retail website because many people don’t know that it is possible to generate a good amount of free traffic to retail websites.

Another great method of generating traffic for free to any website is buy creating videos. If you are doing articles and making videos, why not just take all of your articles and turn each one into a few short videos? If you haven’t noticed, video sharing sites are becoming more popular every day. Now, when it comes to creating articles and videos for free website traffic, there are many people that don’t know how to maximize their exposure with each article and video. My friend Dan Dimit and I have put together tons of free materials that allow you to learn the correct ways of getting free traffic using aticle marketing, videos, and tons of other effective techniques. If you haven’t signed up for your free info, then you can do so now to the left of this blog post.

There is a basic rule that we all need to follow when we are submitting our articles to the many article directory sites. And if you decide to follow this one rule, chances are that your article will be accepted by the most number of these sites. That one rule is to create quality content for your readers by actually discussing the article topic and NOT just giving your readers a sales pitch for your product.

Believe it or not, many article directory sites are almost always going to reject your article if it looks like you are trying to sell something. Now, since I mentioned selling, you probably know that since I took the time to write this article that I probably have a few things that I could sell you. Well, let’s just say that you are probably right. The good thing for me is that you are now deep into the second paragraph of this article and you have no idea what my product may be IF I did have something to offer you. That’s a good sign! In the majority of cases the article directory sites are going to applaud me for not making my article a “sales pitch.” As long as the next few paragraphs that I share with you are good content, then there is a high chance that this article will be accepted by the highest number of article directory sites. (Psssst. I know your reading this on my blog, I post all of my articles to my blog as well)

What you want to do is craft your article so that you hit hard on the topic without using any “fluff.” These sites aren’t necessarily looking for a 3 page article that tells an irrelevant 2 page story and then spends 1 page discussing the article topic. What the sites are looking for is that you discuss the topic of your article title without filing the article with links to your web pages. There is a box for the authors that is especially designed for creating an offer for your readers. That box is the “About the Author” or the “Resource” box. Limit your “advertising” to this box and the article directory sites will thank you for it.

So, what exactly is the best length for your article submission? Well, to be honest with you, in my experience if you DO create a short half-page article (around 600 words), and you make it interesting and hit hard on the article title, then the article directory sites aren’t going to care if your article hasn’t reached the 2 page mark. Keeping this in mind, if you are limiting your own personal advertising to the “About the Author” box like you should, and if you do write a killer half page articles then they will: 1. Take less time to write (40 minutes max for many authors) 2. Still get accepted by many of the article directory sites 3. Get read faster (since it’s shorter) which means that people will see your “offer” in the “About the Author” box even faster. This means that you have greater chances of accomplishing your goal of writing your article so that it gets free traffic to your websites.

Good luck with your articles and just do everyone a favor and don’t waste your time writing a bunch of articles that are actually just sales pitches. Here is an example of my “About the Author” box for the article directory site:
